About me

My name is Sushma Maddison Tweed, I am a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with over 30 years experience of working in mental health in both the NHS and my private practice. My approach in therapy is warm, open, clear and collaborative as I believe that thinking about having therapy can be a difficult step to take. I can help you take the first step to identify the difficulties and struggles you are experiencing in a calm and caring environment. Therapy is a journey that we will take together to address the issues that are important to you. These may be to help you gain confidence, cope with loss, realise inner strength and resilience, or may be to help you to recover and achieve the goals you felt were lost.

I have been specialising in CBT practice since 2006 and obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in CBT. I have completed training in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) which is used specifically for multiple/single traumas as well as being a qualified Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing practitioner (EMDR). EMDR is found to be most effective for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a large range of mental health conditions including phobias, different anxiety disorders, grief, low self-esteem, complex trauma, chronic pain.

I originally qualified as a registered nurse (Registered Mental health Nurse-RMN). Since qualifying as an RMN I have completed my BSc (Hons) degree in Health Studies, MSc in CBT, and the EMDR practitioners training. The diploma in Drug & Alcohol studies was studied in 1998. I undertook a Kings Fund Managers programme (which was very useful when I managed various mental health services), completed a Supervision course and Solution Focussed Therapy course (University of Hertfordshire).

Since 1993 I have worked in the community in a variety of clinical settings such as community mental health teams, assertive outreach services, forensic services, specialist services such as drug and alcohol services and as a Nurse Consultant in a community eating disorder service. I currently work for the Bedfordshire NHS Wellbeing Service (IAPT) and in my private practice.

As a highly experienced and specialist practitioner my treatment approach will be evidence-based and tailored to your individual needs, ensuring and maintaining a high standard of care.
